Residence Visa

Parent Migration

Immigration has recently announced the re-opening of the parent residence category in a limited way. 2500 visas per year will be granted with 2000 visas reserved for those who have previously submitted their expression of interest.

The process has two stages.

The first step - You should submit an expression of interest (EOI) which will go into a pool. The selection of EOIs is through a ballot system. If your EOI is selected from the pool, it undergoes preliminary verification and after verification, Immigration may invite you to apply for residence. The earliest date you can submit a new EOI is in May 2023 with the first ballot selection scheduled for August 2023. Several criteria must be met including sponsorship (your child must be a resident for at least 3 years and earn a minimum prescribed salary for two out of the last three-year period – for example, to sponsor one parent - the income is one and half times the median wage for one sponsor and double the median wage if there are two sponsors. To sponsor two parents- with one sponsor the double the median wage is required and with two sponsors two and half times median wage is required. – The current median wage for 2022 is $57,740.80. The income of your spouse/sibling can be used to meet the income requirement). The other requirements include meeting English language requirements, health, and character.

If invited to apply for residence, you can submit the residence application which is the second stage. Meeting the acceptable standards of health could be a challenge for some and it is prudent to seek legal advice if you believe that the medical requirements may not be met.
